City tour with embassy staff to mark Roma Holocaust Memorial Day in August 2024.
On the occasion of the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, Ambassador-Counsellor Stefan Waizer invited the embassies of France, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, the United States of America and the United Kingdom to Budapest for a guided walk of the UCCU Foundation, during which we learned about the history of the Roma minority and the Roma Holocaust in the VIII district of Budapest. Thank you very much to the UCCU for a very informative programme, which our Embassy warmly recommends to all interested parties.
Österreichische Botschaft Budapest
The tour offered a unique and insightful perspective into the history, culture, and life of the Roma community in the VIII. district of Budapest. It was both educational and engaging, shedding light on aspects of Roma heritage that are unfortunately – often overlooked. The guide’s stories and engagement added a powerful and empathizing dimension to the historical and cultural information shared during the tour. The workshop on stereotypes was equally impactful. It provided a safe and open space for participants to explore and challenge their own preconceptions about the Roma community. The activities were thoughtfully designed, encouraging honest dialogue and fostering deeper understanding among attendees. The facilitators demonstrated great skill in guiding discussions, ensuring that every voice was heard and respected.
